The General had just landed his helicopter for a quick refueling stop before continuing his flight. I got the fuel call and drove my tanker truck to the flight line where I parked, grounded the truck and began to refuel the helicopter. That’s when I heard a crackling sound coming from inside the fuel tank. It was the same sound that I had heard while watching a training film back in tech school. It was the sound of static electricity building up. One spark and the entire area could blow up. What I had to do was shut down the refueling operation. The crew chief wasn’t too happy hear that. We had a few words, but I shut it down and went back to the section. Another driver finished the job later, when it was safe. The talk at the NCO club that night was about an out-of-control General who was ranting and raving about being held up by an idiot fuel jockey.
